The Explore Foundation (EF) promotes and supports distinguished modern-day explorers, founded by the award-winning environmentalist and scientist Tim Lavery in 2010.

EF, proudly based in rural, south west Ireland, the western edge of Europe, is also developing a wide range of international adventure events, activities and services such as the Explore Foundation Adventure Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Exploration and the Ireland Adventure Race.

Charles Howard-Bury - Irish Explorer Series

The explorer Charles Howard-Bury was educated privately at his ancestral home of Charleville Castle, Tullamore, Ireland and later at Eton, and then the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, where he graduated as a Captain in 1904. He served with his regiment in India prior to World War I.

He kept meticulous diaries of his adventures over the years which included an expedition to the remote Tian Shan Mountains in 1913 and is best remembered as having lead the first reconnaissance expedition to Mount Everest in 1921 on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society.
